Chapter 10
Under my breath, I said a spell to deepen the shadows, then darted around the bend after the knights. They were just vanishing down a side hall one intersection down. Hurriedly, but not clumsily, I set out after them.
I paused at the corner, peered around it, then continued in their wake. Strangely none of them glanced around or looked backward. They werenât alert at all. It was almost as if they were sleepwalking. Weirder and weirder.
They went up a flight of stairs, down another corridor, and stopped. To my shock, they were meeting the butler, Taras, who stood between the two knights that kept guard on that wing. Iâd noted them earlier but had taken no interest. All the wings had guards.
The knights bowed to Taras for some reasonâhe was a butler, not a lordâand then he led them past the guards and down the corridor that was on the third floor of the west wing.
I darted forward, but slowed when I reached the archway where the guards were stationed. Frustrated, I watched Taras and the knights vanish around a corner.
I inched to the edge of the side-corridor, then pulled out an acorn from one of my satchels. Hating to lose one of my spellgredients but not sure what else to do, I tossed it down the side-corridor, saying a spell under my breath to magnify its noise. Sure enough, a loud pop sounded out. The guards stiffened. One raced off to investigate while the other remained at his post.
Damn. Well, there was nothing for it. I marched out into the side-corridor toward him. He was watching his mate, and I was still half-hidden by my shadow spell. He turned toward me, but too late. I blew a plume of powder in his face, and instantly his eyelids dipped. His knees folded, and I eased him to the floor, where he breathed regularly, deeply asleep.
I made sure the other guard was still moving away, then slipped down the corridor theyâd been guarding and into the west wing. Where had Taras taken the company of knights? I hit one side-corridor, then another. This one. I was almost sure of it. Feeling my palms sweat, I took the turn and all but trotted down the hallway. I prayed I hadnât lost them.
As I glided down the hallway, I heard a sound up a stairwell, and followed it. My heart beat rapidly in my chest. Had I just pursued a false lead? If I had, all of this was for nothing.
The Oblethars were keeping something hidden, and I meant to find out what. Everything might depend on it.
Relief surged through me as I saw the party of knights stride down a hallway at the head of the stairs, moving toward a stout door taller than the others. Curious, I inched forward. Was this their destination?
All too soon, Taras reached the door and flung it open. As he did, he moved aside, ushering the armored troops into the chamber beyond. His head swung back in the direction of the stairway, maybe suspecting something, maybe just making sure.
